Lorenzo Scott
b. 1934
Lorenzo Scott was born in rural West Point, Ga., on July 23, 1934, one of 11 children. He moved to Atlanta with his family when still a child and grew up across the street from a Baptist church. He quit school after completing the 10th grade. As a young man he found work in carpentry and construction. He began selling his art on an Atlanta street corner in 1983. Scott creates his own picture frames using car bondo and gold paint to try to imitate the elegant frames he saw in the Met in NYC and the High Museum in Atlanta. His brightly painted works are often religious, comical, or dealing with pop culture. In 2002, Scott was honored with an Artist of Distinction award from the Folk Art Society of America. ⁹
