Grover Evan Nix - “Stix by Nix”
1927 - 2020
Grover Evan Nix is also known as “Stix by Nix”. His signature adorns the bottom of each of his magnificent canes he carved. He also indicated on each cane the type of wood used such as “Old Hickory” for Andrew Jackson, or “wormy chestnut” for Bill Clinton. Recently, Grover Nix passed away in December, 2020. He was 93. I purchased the collection of canes from the Mary Katherine Young estate who was the mother of Ginger Young of Ginger Young Gallery fame. I would visit with Mary Katherine at her house when I went to Slotin. She had an amazing eye and would give one of the canes to her husband Joe, on special occasions such as his birthday. He had passed away and they were near and dear to her as a reminder of her husband. I was honored when Ginger called me and said, “My mom wanted you to have them if you want to buy them.” Ginger knew I pestered her mom for 5 years to buy them. They are amongst the most interesting, fun, and folky carvings in my collection.
