Evelyn Gibson
Born 1944
Evelyn Gibson, a black visionary artist to watch, illustrates biblical scenes in an art modern style, with her figures often posed as though they were models for a fashion magazine. In one painting, costumes are emphasized and faces are hidden. In another Daniel wears a beautiful red cardinal’s robe and a bow tie – he looks pleased with himself, satisfied with his appearance and stature in life, even though he is being circled by lions – albeit friendly ones – right out of the Wizard of Oz. Gibson, a stenographer, scrimped for 5 years in order to take a trip to the Holy Land in 1985. In 1992, she started to paint recalled visualizations of her trip. “It all came together for me over there,” she says. “Christians, Jewish, and Islams – they all looked beautiful together.” ⁴
