Preston Geter
b. 1932
Preston Geter was born and raised on a Georgia farm where he picked cotton and learned first hand the rich folk traditions of his African American co-workers. Geter later went into the antiques business for approximately 25 years. He began carving as a hobby but around 1990 he phased out his antique business and began carving full time. Preston started carving single free standing figures but one day decided to stack them totem pole style and because of the response from collectors these mini totems are now virtually all he does. Geter stacks Old Testament figures, sports figures, and perhaps the most popular, his “world famous” icons. Preston says that people need to get close and read the captions at the base of his totems to understand why, for example, Jesus and Elvis might appear in the same piece. You may sometimes find Preston selling his artwork at Georgia flea markets but it is usually only available at folk art galleries around the country. Preston Geter now resides in Bowden, GA. - Bio info from Duff Lindsay at Lindsay Gallery
